Sodium sulfide is a chemical compound with the formula Na2S, often found in its hydrated form as Na2S·9H2O. Both the anhydrous and hydrated forms are typically colorless solids when pure, but technical grades of sodium sulfide can range from yellow to brick red due to the presence of polysulfides. It is commonly available as a crystalline mass, flakes, or as a fused solid, all of which are soluble in water and produce strongly alkaline solutions.
When sodium sulfide and its hydrates come into contact with moist air, they release hydrogen sulfide gas. This gas is highly toxic, flammable, and corrosive, characterized by its unpleasant odor resembling rotten eggs.
